Abstract
PURPOSE: To safely obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting phenol with an alkali metal hydroxide, reacting reaction product with CO2, extracting the reaction mixture with water precipitating and separating the objective compound with an acid and recovering the alkali metal hydroxide by a specific treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali metal salt of phenol produced by the reaction of phenol with an alkali metal hydroxide is made to react with CO2 and an alkali metal salt of hydroxybenzoic acid is separated from the obtained reaction mixture in the form of an aqueous solution. The objective hydroxybenzoic acid is precipitated and recovered from the aqueous solution by the addition of an acid and the mother liquor is subjected to reverse osmosis treatment and electrolysis treatment to produced and recover the alkali metal hydroxide. The objective compound useful as a raw material for preservative, a mildew- proofing agent, a liquid crystal substance, a color developer for heat-sensitive recording paper, etc., can be produced by this process. The recovered alkali metal hydroxide is recycled and reused for the reaction with phenol. The alkali metal hydroxide can be recovered at a recovery of as high as 99%.
