Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily obtain the titled compound useful as a color-developer for pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive recording paper in one pot and in high yield and purity, by dehydrating a reaction mixture of 4-hydroxybiphenyl and potassium hydroxide and reacting with carbon dioxide gas in a hydrophobic solvent at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A reaction mixture produced by the reacting of 4-hydro xybiphenyl with KOH is dehydrated and then reacted with carbon dioxide gas in a hydrophobic solvent (e.g. triisopropylbenzene, naphthalene or biphenyl) at 150W250°C, preferably 160W220°C to obtain the objective 4-hydroxybiphenyl-3- carboxylic acid. The reaction pressure of carbon dioxide gas is preferably normal pressure W 2kg/cm2.G, more preferably normal pressure.
