CONSTITUTION:In a magnetic recorder by which an FM-modulated information signal and a PCM can be recorded onto a magnetic tape 2, a recording level of the information signal and the PCM signal is controlled in accordance with a characteristic of the magnetic tape 2. For instance, in accordance with whether the magnetic tape 2 is an application type metallic tape or an E vapor-deposition metallic tape, a recording radio wave level of an FM modulation luminance signal YFM and a recording current level of a PCM audio signal APCM are switched to such values as C/N of a reproducing output of the FM modulation luminance signal YFM becomes maximum, and an error rate (e) of the PCM audio signal APCM becomes minimum, respectively.
