Abstract

PURPOSE: To secure an optimum compression ratio all the time by fitting a subpiston in a subchamber being interconnected to a combustion chamber, and controlling an actuator, driving this subpiston, according to a compression ratio factor to be found on the basis of engine speed and suction air quantity.
CONSTITUTION: A subschamber 1c being interconnected to a combustion chamber 1b is formed in a cylinder head 1a of an engine body 1, and a subpiston 10 is fitted in this subchamber 1c free of rocking motion. The subpiston is moved up or down by an actuator 11 to be controlled by a control device 12. And, at this control device 12, each detecting signal out of a pressure sensor 5 detecting vacuum pressure, a water temperature sensor 6 and an engine speed sensor 9 is inputted, and a compression ratio map is selected on the basis of cooling water temperature. Next, referring to this selected compression ratio map, a compression ratio factor on the basis of the existing vacuum pressure and engine speed is determined, operating the optimum compression ratio from this compression ratio factor, and the actuator 11 is driven and controlled to secure this optimum compression ratio.
