Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain large-size and homogeneous quartz glass doped with europium which has uniformity per unit volume not more than specified value and can be applied for quartz laser glass and a glass filter. CONSTITUTION:After hydrolyzing alkylsilicate such as ethylsilicate by using an acidic catalyst such as hydrochloric acid, fine silica particles are dispersed to this hydrolyzed soln. and pH is regulated to 3-6. Then Eu is added to the pH-regulated soln. e.g. as a form of a europic chloride soln. and this mixture is stirred to allow the above-mentioned soln. to gel. Then dry gel is obtained by heating this gel. Thereafter the obtained porous gel material is heated e.g. to 950 deg.C in the atmosphere to perform respective treatments such as promotion of condensation reaction, dehydration and removal of organic substance. This treated material is heated e.g. to 1320 deg.C in the inert atmosphere such as He and vitrified to obtain the quartz glass doped with europium.
