Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the toughness and strength of a sintered body by adding a prescribed amt. of beta-form Si3N4 whiskers to Si3N4 contg. a sintering assistant and by sintering them. CONSTITUTION:A powdery mixture is prepd. by adding 5-50wt.% beta-form Si3N4 whiskers of 0.1-1mum diameter and 30-50mum length to Si3N4 contg. <=10wt.% sintering assistant made of one or more kinds of compds. selected among oxides of rare earth elements such as Y2O3 and Ce2O3 or Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO, TiO2, HfO2, AlN, spinel, etc. The powdery mixture is molded and the molded body is degreased, e.g., at about 700 deg.C in a nitrogen atmosphere and sintered at about 1750 deg.C under ordinary pressure for about 4hr to obtain the titled sintered body.
