Abstract

PURPOSE:To more smoothly switch a liquid crystal by forming the 1st layer of two insulating layers of a high dielectric material, etc., and forming the 2nd layer of a low resistance dielectric material. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2 are formed on substrates 1 of a liquid crystal cell 10 and a vertical shorting preventive layer 3 consisting of the material having a high dielectric constant or ferroelectric material and an orientation control layer 4 consisting of the low resistance dielectric material are formed on at least one transparent electrode 2. The two substrates 1 are so disposed that the electrodes 2 face each other. The ferroelectric liquid crystal FLC 5 is held in place between the substrates. Since the electric capacity of the insulating layers is thereby increased, the sure bistability is imparted to the liquid crystal and the liquid crystal is more smoothly switched.
