Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure the thickness of cover over sand layer readily and accurately, by applying a vane testing method, capturing the amount of change in torque, which is generated in a rotary resistor, distinguishing the sand and viscous soil, and using the result for judgement. CONSTITUTION:A measuring instrument 1 is lowered to the bottom of water with a piece of rope 11. A seating plate 2 is seated on the surface of the layer of sand S. A motor 6 is rotated at a constant speed. An impeller unit 8 is rotated in the direction R at a constant speed. The impeller unit 8 is continuously pushed and inserted into the cover over a sand layer by the actions of gears 4 and thread rod 3 in the direction of the thickness T of the cover over the sand layer slowly at a constant speed as shown by an arrow D. The amount of change in torque, which is generated in the rotating impeller unit 8 at this time, is caught as the electric signal of a current value on a working ship 10. The signal is compared with the torque characteristic of standard cover over a sand ground. Thus the thickness T of the cover over the sand layer is determined.
