Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve dielectric breakdown voltage and to facilitate film formation by using a thin polyimide film as an insulating and protective film for a transparent electrode film to the part where an electrochromic layer is not formed. CONSTITUTION:The transparent electrode film 2 consisting of ITO (or 'NESA(R)') is formed on a transparent electrode substrate 1 for display electrodes (working electrodes) consisting of glass and the polythiophene film (electrolytically polymerized film) 3 as the electrochromic layer is formed to the shape forming desired figures, characters or part thereof. The insulating and protective film 4 consisting of the polyimide for the purpose of insulating and protecting the transparent electrode film 2 is formed to the part where the polythiophene film 3 is not formed, by which the display electrodes (working electrodes) are constituted. On the other hand, the transparent electrode film 7 consisting of the ITO is formed on a counter electrode substrate 8 consisting of glass as the counter electrode. The dielectric breakdown voltage is improved and the film formation is facilitated by using the polyimide film in such a manner.
