PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer for printing ink having excellent printing characteristics in high-speed printing, by reacting formaldehyde to a reaction product derived from rosins and phenols and esterifying the obtained novolak compound. CONSTITUTION:(A) A reaction product produced by the thermal reaction of (i) rosins with (ii) phenols in the presence of (iii) an acid catalyst is made to react with (B) formaldehyde in the presence of (C) an acid catalyst and the obtained novolak compound is esterified to obtain the objective polymer for printing ink. Preferably, a polyhydric alcohol is used in the reaction in an amount of <10wt.% based on the novolak compound.
