Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight aggregate of good quality having glassy films and a high surface film strength, by mixing discarded glass powder in an incinerated ash of sewage sludge, granulating the resultant mixture, calcining the obtained grains at a specific temperature and cooling the calcined grains. CONSTITUTION:An crushed glass powder is mixed in an incinerated ash of sewage sludge consisting of components of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, FeO, P2O5, CaO, etc., and the resultant granules are calcined at 900-1,200 deg.C while vigorously stirring and preventing mutual adhesion to convert the surfaces of the resultant grains 1 into a semimolten state. The interiors thereof are softened to simultaneously evolve a gas and form closed cells 2 and expand the softened whole, which is then air-cooled to form hard glassy films 3 on the surfaces and afford the aimed lightweight aggregate having about 1.0 apparent specific gravity.
