Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity resorcin from an aqueous phase at a high recovery ratio, by decomposing an oxidation product of m-diisopropylbenzene with molecular oxygen with an acid, distilling away acetone, adding a specific compound to the obtained residue and separating an oil from water in the presence of a specific amount of water.
CONSTITUTION: m-Diisopropylbenzene is oxidized with molecular oxygen to provide an oxidation product containing m-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide, which is then decomposed in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent (preferably toluene) to distil away acetone. At least one of monohydric phenols, nitriles, cyclic ether compound and water-insoluble dialkyl ketone in an amount so as to provide ≥5pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. above-mentioned solvent contained in the still residue after removing the acetone is added to separate an oil from water in the presence of water (5W80wt.%, especially 15W60wt.% water concentration) in an amount sufficient to form two liquid phases to recover resorcin from the obtained aqueous phase. In separating the oil from the water, acetone concentration is preferably ≤10wt.%.
