Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a raw material for engineering polymers from inexpensive and readily obtainable raw materials efficiently, by reacting a benzene with CCl4 in the presence of Lewis acid catalyst and adding a phenol to the prepared reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:A benzene is reacted with CCl4 in the presence of Lewis acid catalyst (e.g., AlCl3) in the molar ratio of 5:1-1:200 at 0-20 deg.C to form diphenyldichloromethane and 1-20mol. based on 1mol. benzene of a phenol is reacted with the prepared reaction mixture at 100-150 deg.C and the catalyst is deactivated to give the titled substance. The processes are usually carrier out in the absence of a solvent and preferably effected while sufficiently stirring the reaction systems. In the above-mentioned method, isolation of diphenyldichloromethane as an intermediate is not required.
