Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a homogeneous carbon fiber having high strength, elasticity, electric conductivity and corrosion resistance, by introducing an organic compound and metal, etc., together with a carrier gas into a high-temperature reaction furnace, pressurizing the interior of the furnace and instantaneously decompressing the interior, repeating the above-mentioned operations and discharging the formed fiber with a gas stream. CONSTITUTION:An organic compound (e.g. benzene) and metal or compound thereof (e.g. ferrocene), together with a carrier gas (e.g. helium gas), are introduced into a high-temperature reaction furnace 3 and heated at 1,200-1,300 deg.C by a heater 4 to form a carbon fiber by a vapor process. A valve 5 is then closed to pressurize the reaction furnace 3 while maintaining the reactive atmosphere and then opened after confirming that the pressure attains a given value with a pressure detector 6 to instantaneously release the pressure and decompress the interior. A gaseous phase in the reaction furnace 3 is moved to discharge a carbon fiber formed and deposited in the reaction furnace 3 with a gas stream. The above-mentioned operations are repeated to afford the aimed homogeneous carbon fiber.
