Abstract

PURPOSE:To save man-hour by automatically cleaning a magnetic tape device when the running length of a magnetic tap reaches a specified value. CONSTITUTION:A counter circuit 5 counts value proportionate to the length of the running of a magnetic tape, and when the value in the circuit 5 comes larger, a comparator circuit 6 informs a control circuit of it by means of a signal 13, and the control 7 transmits a cleaning request signal 14 to a controller. The controller 1 checks the status of the cleaning request signal 4 at the time of completing the execution of an unloading instruction, and transmits a cleaning instruction to an accessor control circuit 10. The circuit 10 activates an accessor 9 to take out a cleaning tape 12 and load it on the magnetic tape device. The control circuit 7 detects the loading of the tape 12, executes a prescribed cleaning operation, thereafter controls to wind the tape 12. The accessor 9 and the accessor control circuit 10 remove the tape 12 from the magnetic tape device, returns it to a cleaning tape retaining cell 15, then informs a controller 1 of the end of the cleaning operation.
