Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal recording material having strong absorption in a near infrared region at or above a specified wavelength, by using a speci fied leuco dye and a specified color developer. CONSTITUTION:A leuco dye of formula I, wherein each of R1 and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl, and each of R3 and R4 is an alkyl, is used in a thermal recording material utilizing a color forming reaction with a leuco dye and a color devel oper for developing the dye into a color upon making contact with the dye. When the leuco dye of formula I is developed into color by a conventionally known color developer, the images formed are difficult to read in the wave length range of at least than 900nm through they can be satisfactorily read in the wavelength range of up to 800nm. However, when the leuco dye is com bined with a color developer of formula II, wherein X is a halogen, absorption intensity at wavelengths of at least 900nm is drastically enhanced, and the images to be formed can be read by an image reader using a general-purpose semiconductor laser. The compound of formula I may be, for example, 3-(N,N-diphenylaminophenyl)-3-{bis-1,1-(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-ethylen o-2}-6-dimethyla minophthalide, whereas the color developer of formula II may be, for example, chloranil or bromanil.
