Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve a performance of cleaning a exhaust gas by piercing holes on a outside periphery of a honeycomb structure and, at the same time, welding tightly at circumferences of these holes by using a laser beam irradiation. CONSTITUTION:Thin plates made of a ferrite type stainless steel containing chromium and aluminum are formed into a corrugated and a flat sheets, and they are put one over the other and coiled into a shape of a honeycomb structure. On the outside periphery of this honeycomb structure, holes 8 are pierced and, at the same time, the circumferences of these holes 8 are welded by a laser beam 7 irradiated from a carbon dioxide layer piercer etc. toward the center of that structure. Then, a catalyst is carried in the obtained structure, two covers 6 are welded at the both ends of this structure to seal the holes which were formed by laser beam irradiation and thus a catalyst carrier A is formed. A resistance to the oxidation of steel plate can be improved by this method.
