Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve durability by providing many spherical projecting parts to the surface of a solid electrolyte in contact with an electrode layer for contact with the detecting gas and dispersing and fixing catalysts which react with the detecting gas to the pores of a porous protective layer covering the electrode layer. CONSTITUTION:The spherical projecting parts 5 consisting of the solid electrolyte are formed on the surface of the test tube-shaped solid electrolyte 1 and the surfaces of the projecting parts 5 are coated with the Pt electrode layer 3. The projecting parts are penetrated into the porous spinel protective layer consisting of ceramics 4. The catalysts such as Pt particles 6 are dispersed and fixed into the pores of the layer 4. The means for bonding to the layer 4 are intensified and the electrode surface area is increased by the projecting parts 5; in addition, the oxidizing effect of the gaseous components is maintained by the particles 6 dispersed and fixed in the pores 7. The exfoliation, etc., of the layer 4 are, therefore, obviated without generating the deviation of lambdapoints and the durability is improved.
