PURPOSE:To enable the width of a white paper to be detected even when a highly reflective sheet-holding plate or the like is present in the vicinity of a recording region, by causing the plane containing an optical path from a light-emitting element to a light-receiving element to obliquely intersect a recording surface. CONSTITUTION:A reflection-type photosensor 1 is so mounted on a carriage 4 that a light-emitting surface 2A and a light-receiving surface 3A thereof are maintained at a predetermined angle (acute angle) theta relative to an objective surface 5 to be detected of a recording paper. The carriage 4 is moved in parallel to the objective surface 5, while the photosensor 1 detects the presence or absence of the recording paper on the objective surface 5, and detects the width of the paper. When the plane containing an optical path from the surface 2A to the surface 3A is maintained at an angle theta' to the vertical, intense irregularly reflected light characteristic of a white reflective surface can be detected from the recording paper.
