When a second mode is selected, from the standpoint that the main-scanning direction dimension of the detected recording medium has been obtained and recording mediums are generally standardized, the sub-scanning direction dimension of the recording medium is calculated according to such a fixed rule as that the sub-scanning direction dimension of a minimum recording medium assumed from the main- scanning direction dimension is used. Then, an image area is set based on these dimensions. Since the image area set by the second mode has the possibility of differing in size from the image area set by the first mode, a mode change- over during recording action is prohibited.
