Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a small optical pH sensor, by fixing a phosphor molecule whose spectral fluorescence characteristic changes by the concn. of a hydrogen ion to the leading end surface of an optical fiber through a silane coupling agent. CONSTITUTION:At first, the exposed surface of the core of an optical fiber is modified by the chemical bond of a silane coupling agent At this time, condensation reaction is simply generated between the hydroxyl group (-OH) on the surface of the optical fiber and the methoxy group (-O-CH3) or ethoxy group (-O-C2H5) directly bonded to silicon of the silane coupling agent at room temp. In a case having no hydroxyl group like a plastic optical fiber, a hydroxyl group may be preliminarily formed to the surface of the optical fiber (core) by a proper oxidizing agent or plasma treatment. By immersing the core of the optical fiber modified by the silane coupling agent in a solution of a phosphor molecule responding to the concn. of a hydrogen ion to generate a change in its fluorescent characteristic, the phosphor molecule can be fixed.
