Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the resistance of stainless steel to corrosion and interstice corrosion without damaging the appearance and at a low cost by dipping the stainless steel in an aq. soln. of chromic acid and sulfuric acid, cathodically electrolyzing the stainless steel at low current density, and then treating the stainless steel with an aq. chromic acid soln. CONSTITUTION:The stainless steel is dipped in the aq. mixed soln. contg. >=about 100g/l chromic acid and >=about 300g/l sulfuric acid and kept at >=about 80 deg.C to transiently remove the passivated film on the surface, and then a passivated film is again formed. The stainless steel is subsequently cathodically electrolyzed at <=5A/dm<2> in an aq. soln. contg. >=about 100g/l chromic acid and about 1/200-1/50mol./l of >=1 kind among sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and a molybdate. As a result, chromium hydroxide is deposited on the surface. The stainless steel is subsequently treated with an aq. soln. contg. about 20g/l chromic acid or the aq. soln. further added with about 1/100-1/20mol./l molybdate, and then air-dried or forced-dried. By this process, the resistance to interstice corrosion can be improved.
