Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a hydrogenated nitrile rubber by efficiently hydrogenating a carbon-carbon double bond of a nitrile group-containing copolymer containing conjugated diene and (meth)acrylonitrile as essential components using a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A nitrile group-containing copolymer containing conjugated diene and (meth)acrylonitrile as essential components is hydrogenated in the presence of a ruthenium compound (e.g. ruthenium dioxide or octadecacarbonylhexaruthenic acid dicesium salt), an organic phosphine (e.g. tri-n-butylphosphine or tricyclohexylphosphine) and an organic amine (e.g. triethylamine or N-methylpyrrolidine) usually at 70-150 deg.C and 20-150kg/cm<2> pressure. The preferable amount of the catalyst is 0.02-5wt.% of the ruthenium compound based on the copolymer, 1-100mol. of the organic phosphine and 1-30mol. of the organic amine per 1mol. of ruthenium.
