Abstract
PURPOSE:To contrive to improve the dimensional accuracy after secondary molding and to accelerate the rationalization of molding during curing by a method wherein expansion is further accelerated by the difference between the pressure in a tank and that in expanding particles developed by precipitously reducing the pressure in the tank to the specified pressure or less after the finish of the predetermined expansion during the expansion by heating. CONSTITUTION:Pre-metered expandable thermoplastic resin particles are fed from a hopper 8 to a expansion tank 1 and, after that, hot air is introduced in the expansion tank 1. After the pressure in the tank is reduced to the predetermined vacuum, steam is continuously flowed in the tank so as to raise the pressure in the tank in order to keep the interior of the tank within a certain pressure range. Under the state just mentioned above, resin particles continue to expand in the expansion tank up to the predetermined volume. After that, the interior of the tank is put under enclosed state and evacuated so as to discharge the steam stagnant in the tank in order to dry the particles. After the evacuation to the specified vacuum or 50-760mm Hg, hot air is fed in the tank so as to bring again the interior of the tank into the pressurized state and keep said state for a certain period of time in order to rapidly infiltrate air in the expanding particles. Finally, the pressure in the tank is brought back to atmospheric pressure and a discharge valve 4 is opened and the resultant preexpanded particles are taken out of the tank.
