Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate strange steering feeling and to obtain a gear ratio corresponding to vehicle speed by holding the steering gear ratio constant for small range steering angle, and modifying the gear ratio corresponding to vehicle speed at the time point when the steering angle exceeds over aforementioned range. CONSTITUTION:A variable steering gear ratio device 4 is arranged between an input shaft 2 provided with a steering wheel 1 and an output shaft 3. The variable steering gear device 4 comprises two differential large gears 51, 52 facing each other, a differential gear mechanism 5 having small differential gears 53, 53 engagable with the large gears 51, 52 and a motor 6 for controlling rotation of a differential gear box 54. Input/output rotary angle ratio is varied by rotating the differential gear box 54 through the motor 6 so as to control the steering ratio G variably. The motor 6 is controlled through a control circuit 12 such that the gear ratio G is maintained constant for small range of steering angle lower than a setting level and modified corresponding to vehicle speed when the steering angle exceeds over the setting level.
