Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer whose flow characteristics during molding are largely improved without detriment to the thermal stability and softening temp., by copolymerizing vinyl chloride with a cyclic olefin in the presence of a radical initiator. CONSTITUTION:Vinyl chloride and a cyclic olefin are copolymerized in the presence of a radical initiator. As the carbon no. of the cyclic olefin used, 4-10 are preferable. Monocyclic olefins such as cyclobutene, cyclohexene etc. and polycyclic olefins such as dicyclo-(2,2,1)heptene-2 can be cited. As the carbon no. of the cyclic olefins, 4-10 are preferable and when it is 11 or larger, the softening temp. of the copolymer is lowered. The amt. of the cyclic olefin used in the polymer is pref. in the range of 1-10wt.% of the total amt. of the monomers. When the amt. of the cyclic olefin is less than 1wt.%, the improving effect of processing flow characteristics is too small and when it is higher than 10wt.%, the softening temp. is lowered and the mechanical properties are deteriorated.
