Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten a seeking distance without increasing the weight of a head actuator and to attain precise positioning even when an area occupied by servo patterns is reduced by making the patterns formed on a magnetic medium into the patterns, which are mutually different according to the areas in charge of respective magnetic heads. CONSTITUTION:An interval between a pair of magnetic heads 13a and 13b provided at a single head slider 14 is formed as approximately a half of a total data recording area, the magnetic head 13a on an outer circumference shares the recording and reproducing of the outer half of the total data recording area, and the magnetic head 13b on the inner circumference shares the recording and reproducing of the inner half of the total data recording area, respectively. Respective heads 13a and 13b can access the track of the total data recording area only by seeking approximately the half of the distance of the total data recording area, and the single head slider 14 composed of the two heads 13a and 13b is supported by a single gimbal. Thus, the weight slightly increases, the head 13a on the outer circumference shares an area Z1, which is the outer half of the total data area, the precise track position can be detected, and a servo signal for precise track positioning can be obtained.
