Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently handle a color document picture by performing local area discrimination based on color difference information or the like in a three- primary color space and area extraction based on rough area discrimination with a group of areas as a unit. CONSTITUTION:A color document 310 is stored as three primary color pictures in memories 305-307 by a color picture input device 301. A local area color discriminating part 302 reads out three-primary color data and discriminates whether each picture element includes color information or is in a monochromatic area and stores the result in a mask picture memory 308, and a linking area extracting part 303 reads out mask pictures having values '0' and '1' from the mask picture memory 308 and labels every linking areas and stores them in a label picture memory 309. A rough area color discriminating part 304 reads out data from the label picture memory 309 and three primary color memories 305-307 and performs the rough processing and sends results to a control part 300, and classifications and colors of areas are discriminated. Thus, the color document picture is efficiently handled.
