Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and heat and shock resistances by forming the surface of one of sliding faces with a ceramic consisting of SiC and a composite material of Si3N4 containing at least one of particles and whiskers thereof and forming voids. CONSTITUTION:The surface of one of seal members 5, 6 which are slidingly brought into contact with each other of a floating seal is formed with a ceramic consisting of SiC and at least one of the particles and whiskers of Si3N4, and voids, and the mother phases 1 of the SiC and the particles 2 of the Si3N4 are allowed to mixedly exist while the void 3 is formed to be approx. 20mum or less in diameter with a porosity of approx. 15%. And, the other sliding face is formed by use of a material, e.g., Al2O3, with a hardness lower than the hardness of the particle or whisker of the Si3N4. Thereby, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance can be improved reducing the wear of the opposite material while increasing heat resistance and shock resistance.
