Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure biological oxygen demand (BOD) quickly and highly accurately, by utilizing suspending organic material with fixed microorganism. CONSTITUTION:A specified amount of drained water is introduced into a compressing and heating well 3 with a drainage pump 1. Chlorine or sodium hydroxide is added in the well 3 so as to obtain 0.5N. Then compressing and heating are performed. A valve 6 is closed so that a standard solution 5 is not supplied. The compressed and heated water and a buffer solution 7 are sucked with a liquid feeding pump 10. Both liquids are mixed in a mixing coil 9 and guided out into a flow cell 12. Suspending organic material in the treated drained liquid is utilized through thin holes in a film of fixed microorganism of a microbiological electrode 18. At this time, dissolved oxygen is consumed. When the oxygen in the fixed microorganism film is decreased, the output of the dissolved oxygen electrode is slowly decreased, and balanced output corresponding to BOD is obtained. In this way, the suspending organic material is miniaturized into the size so as to pass the thin holes in the microorganism fixing carrier. Thus, the suspending organic material can be utilized with the microorganism. The BOD can be measured quickly and highly accurately.
