Abstract

PURPOSE:To establish an insertion method free from a problem of scratch flaw when a fuel element is inserted into a fuel assembly, by drawing the fuel element into the fuel assembly through a grid cell after placing the fuel element to be inserted, in a protection tube. CONSTITUTION:A fuel element 10 is drawn into a nuclear fuel assembly through a grid band 9 of a grid cell 6 after placing it in a tubular protection tube 12, or the fuel element 10 is inserted into the protection tube 12 after drawing only the protection tube 12 into the fuel assembly through the grid band 9, thereafter the protection tube 12 is solely drawn out and removed from the grid band 9 with holding one end of the fuel element. The protection tube 12 is attached with a conical cap 11 at its inserting end and the other end is opened so as to enable to insert the fuel element 10. And thereby the fuel element 10 contacts with the protection 12 instead of contacting the fuel element 10 with a spring 7 of the grid band 9 and dimples 8, and consequently an appearance of scratch flaw and cutting chips on a surface of the tube are prevented by hardening an outer surface of the protection tube 12 with chromium plating and other similar processing.
