Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce continuously and smoothly high-quality high-MW nylon 12, by postpolymerizing a molten product, obtained by continuously prepolymerizing 12- aminododecanoic acid in a vertical first polymerization tank, in a horizontal second polymerization tank of a specified structure while volatilizing the water formed. CONSTITUTION:Powdery 12-aminododecanoic acid is continuously fed through a metering feeder 14 and a monomer feed inlet 2 to a vertical first polymerization tank 1 equipped with a heating jacket 5 around the external side wall, provided with a heater 6 concentrically formed about the vertical center axis at a height slightly above the center in the inside and a rotating agitator. An inert gas is supplied thereto through an inert gas metering feeder 16, and the mixture is prepolymerized at 180 deg.C or above and a pressure >=1.5atm. (abs.). The obtained molten product of a number- average MW of 5,000-20,000 is sent by a gear pump 21 to a vertical second polymerization tank 30 having a head space 32 and a molten polymer holding section 31 beneath it and provided with an agitator rotating about a horizontal axis 33 and is heated to 200-360 deg.C with a heating jacket 40, and further postpolymerized at normal pressure or in a vacuum while the formed water is volatilized and discharged.
