CONSTITUTION:A black and white display is provided by regulating, in a liquid crystal display device for double refractive type positive display, by regulating a value of product (R)=DELTAn.d.cos<2>theta (wherein DELTAn is anisotropy of refractive index, d is a thickness of a layer, and theta is a pretilt angle, of a nematic liquid crystal 8) to 0.3-0.7, and regulating also an angle THETA between absorption axes (or aces of polarization) of each polarizing plate 9, 10 coated on two substrates 1, 2 to 150R-20 deg.-150R+20 deg.. By this constitution, background color generated by transmitted or reflected color by the interference of light is made substantially uniform and colorless in the visible ray region, so a black display is formed on a white background utilizing a combination of a front polarizing plate 9 and a back polarizing plate 10 in a stage of impression of a selected voltage.
