Abstract
PURPOSE:To eliminate difference of visibility caused by the difference in visual sense of a black and white display by specifying a product of (anisotropy of refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal ) * (thickness of layer of the nematic liquid crystal) X(pretilt angle of the nematic liquid crystal) and an angle between absorption axis of each polarizing plate coated on a first and second substrate, respectively. CONSTITUTION:A black and white display is provided by regulating, in a liquid crystal display device for double refractive type positive display, by regulating a value of product (R)=DELTAn.d.cos<2>theta (wherein DELTAn is anisotropy of refractive index, d is a thickness of a layer, and theta is a pretilt angle, of a nematic liquid crystal 8) to 0.3-0.7, and regulating also an angle THETA between absorption axes (or aces of polarization) of each polarizing plate 9, 10 coated on two substrates 1, 2 to 150R-20 deg.-150R+20 deg.. By this constitution, background color generated by transmitted or reflected color by the interference of light is made substantially uniform and colorless in the visible ray region, so a black display is formed on a white background utilizing a combination of a front polarizing plate 9 and a back polarizing plate 10 in a stage of impression of a selected voltage. Thus, scatter of evaluated visibility due to difference of visual sense is eliminated.
