Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily produce the title good-quality fiber-reinforced metal hardly damaging the opposite material by impregnating a fibrous porous body consisting of inorg. staples and solid lubricant powder with the melt of the base metal under pressure, and then solidifying the melt. CONSTITUTION:The inorg. staples of alumina, silica, etc., the powder of a solid lubricant such as graphite and boron nitride, and a liq. inorg. binder of colloidal silica, etc., are mixed to obtain a wet mixed powder. The mixed powder is vacuum-filtered, and dried at low temp. to remove the binder, and a fibrous porous body (preform) wherein the solid lubricant is adhered to the reinforcing fiber is formed. The preform is then heated to about 300-500 deg.C, placed in the separately preheated plunger die of a high-pressure casting device, and detained. The melt of Al or an Al alloy kept at about 700-850 deg.C is injected, the preform is pressed by the plunger at about 0.5-2t/cm<2> to impregnate the preform with the melt, and then the melt is solidified. By this method, a composite material having wear resistance and hardly damaging the opposite material is easily obtained.
