Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a polymer containing a specific recurring unit, exhibiting ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase even at room temperature or thereabout, having quick response to external factor, capable of displaying moving picture and useful advantageously as a display element having large or curved picture frame. CONSTITUTION:The objective liquid crystal copolymer is composed of the recurring unit of formula I {n is 1-30; R<1> is group of formula II [R<2> is group of formula III or IV (R<3> is 2-6C alkyl)] or group of formula V}. The polymer can be produced e.g. by polymerizing the monomer of formula VI. The monomer of formula VI is produced e.g. by reacting an alkylene dihalide with 4'- hydroxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate, saponifying the resultant carboxylic acid derivative with boron tribromide, etc., in a solvent, reacting with an acid halogenation agent and then with an optically active alcohol and reacting the produced brominated compound with acrylic acid.
