Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title catalyst excellent in potentiality, by reacting cyanopyridine with a (substituted)benzyl chloride, and subjecting it to anion exchange with a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:Cyanopyridine (A) is reacted with a (substituted)benzyl chloride (B) in a solvent and the product is subjected to anion exchange with a compound (C) of formula I (wherein M is Sb, As, P, etc.) to produce the title catalyst of formula II (wherein X<-> is a non-nucleophilic anion such as SbF6<->, AsF6<->, PF6<->, ClO4<->, CF3SO3<-> or BF4<->; and R is H, alkyl or alkoxy). A cationically polymerizable compound can be polymerized in the presence of the above catalyst in an amount of 0.1-10mol.% per mol. of the compound at 120 deg.C or above.
