Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain porous and spongy water-resistant bran pellets not readily collapsing in shape, having improved permeability and water retention characteristics, by drying bran alone or blending bran with starch, rain flour and water, forming and drying and steaming the dried formed blend. CONSTITUTION:Bran having proper particle size is blended with water or water and small amounts of starch and one or more grain flour selected from corn starch and wheat flour as a binder and formed. Then the formed blend is treated with steam at >=100 deg.C for about 5-30min (preferably 15-30min) (preferably after forming and may be before or after drying). Therefore sterilizing effects on the pellets can be expected by the steam treatment. Consequently, the prepared pellets have a low cost and when the pellets are used as a medium, the pellets will not collapse in shape because of air permeability, water retention characteristics and water resistance and an optimum medium usable for culture of cells and microorganisms without anxiety is obtained because neither synthetic substance nor an inorganic binder except water is used as the binder.
