Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the accurate counting result of electrons emitted from a sample by providing a minus voltage applying means which applies a minus voltage to the sample to expand potential differences between an anode voltage and 1st and 2nd grid electrode voltages. CONSTITUTION:When single-wavelength light with prescribed length is projected on the sample 10 from a light source unit 11, the sample 10 emits electrons. The emitted electrons enter an electron detection part 1 through a detection window 2 and pass through 2nd and 1st grid electrodes 6 and 5 and are attracted to an anode ring 4 applied with a high voltage. When the emitted electrons approach the ring 4, an intense electric field is produced nearby, so the electrons are accelerated by the intense electric field to cause a gas discharge phenomenon and the voltage applied to the ring 4 drops to generate voltage pulses. The voltage pulses generated at the ring 4 are amplified by an amplifier 18 and supplied to 1st and 2nd pulse generators 20 and 22 to generate rectangular wave pulses, which are supplied to a counting means 24. Then the voltage pulses of the ring 4 which are counted by the means 24 are displayed as a counting rate on a display means 28.
