Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate a great space used for exhaust of a channel-shaped discharge lamp and prevent breakage of an exhaust pipe by forming an exhaust opening at one end of a bulb along the bulb axis, putting this bulb into an attitude approx. plumb, connecting this exhaust opening with an exhaust machine, and performing exhaustion. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust opening 10 formed at one end of a bulb 1 is nipped by an exhaust chuck 7, and thereby the opening 10 is connected with an exhaust machine and the bulb 1 is supported mechanically. Here the opening 10 takes plumb attitude and is nipped by the exhaust chuck 7, and therefore the bulb 1 will take such an attitude that the bulb axis is situated on a plumb line of the opening 10 and dangles. In this condition, the bulb 1 is exhausted by the exhaust machine through the opening 10. This eliminates necessity for use of any large space otherwise required, and the total center of gravity lies on a plumb line of the opening 10, so that no bending moment is applied and the bulb and exhaust opening are prevented from breakage.
