Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily form a thermo pile with high sensitivity by covering the cold joined part of a thermocouple with an electric insulating thin film which has reflection characteristics in the infrared range. CONSTITUTION:A pattern support film 3 is formed on a substrate 1 and 1st and 2nd thermoelectric material films 3 and 4 are further formed thereupon. A thin film 6 of an electric insulating material is formed on the cold joined part of those 1st and 2nd thermoelectric material films 3 and 4 by, for example, vacuum deposition, etc. Incident light (in infrared range) is transduced by a heat absorber 7 into heat, which raises the temperature of the hot joined part (a) of the thermocouple 5. Further, the cold joined part is covered with the thin film 6, so the incident light is reflected and there is no temperature rise at this part. Consequently, a sufficient temperature difference is generated between the hot joined part (a) and cold joined part (b).
