Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify a device by providing a target which converts a charge particle beam to a fast neutron ray to the vacuum region in a cyclotron and radiating the fast neutron rays directly to the outside. CONSTITUTION:An ion source 6 is provided to the central point of the vacuum region and the target 31 consisting of a Be metal is provided to a part of the side wall 30 of the vacuum region. Since the vacuum is shut off by foil 32 existing right behind the target 31, the target 31 is positioned completely within the vacuum region. A thick material 33 to be inspected and a plastic plate 34 for detecting video are placed on the outside of this foil 32. The fast neutron rays are generated by a Be (p, n) reaction when the charge particle beam 15 collides against this target 31. The fast neutron rays transmitted through the material 33 generate a track phenomenon in the plastic plate 34 and, therefore, the image by the fast neutron rays is developed if this plastic plate 34 is etched. The need for a device such as electron lens to prevent the dissipation of the beam is eliminated in this case.
