Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable thermal writing with good contrast by projecting laser light to part of a display surface of a liquid crystal cell to heat said part to an isotropic liquid phase or nematic phase and cooling the cell while impressing a DC voltage of a specific polarity to the electrodes on the heated surface. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 is injected into the cell and while the DC voltage is impressed between the upper and lower transparent electrodes 2, the cell is cooled slowly to obtain the orientation uniform over the entire part. While the display part of this cell is heated up to the isotropic liquid phase by projecting the argon laser partially to said surface, +3V DC voltage is impressed to the electrodes on the segment side and the cell is cooled down to room temp. The optical axis is then inclined by -15 deg. in the rubbing direction only in the partially heated part. This cell is placed between two sheets of polarizing plates 6 disposed in such a manner that the axes of polarization thereof intersect orthogonally with each other to incline the axis of polarization of the one polarizing plate by -15 deg. with respect to the rubbing direction. Light is thereby not transmitted in the heated part and a black color is shown in said part, while the light is transmitted in the other part. The bright display of the good contrast is thus obtd.
