Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a polycarbonate with remarkably improved impact resistance, having cumylphenol at the terminals and containing acetone-soluble substances in a constant amount or below. CONSTITUTION:A polycarbonate having recurring units expressed by formula I as the backbone chain and cumylphenoxy groups, expressed by formula II and linked to the terminal positions and >=10,000, preferably 15,000-30,000 viscosity-average mol.wt. and <=3.5wt.% acetone-soluble substances. This polycarbonate is obtained by reacting a polycarbonate oligomer derived from bisphenol A with bisphenol A and cumylphenol while stirring in a turbulent state, adding an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali when the viscosity of the reaction mixture solution is increased and reacting the reaction mixture solution as a laminar flow.
