Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a polyether having excellent thermal stability with contents of terminal phenolic hydroxyl groups and phenolate groups suppressed to low values without coloring, by using an organic halide for reaction. CONSTITUTION:A polyether, having recurring units expressed by formula I (Y is direct bond, 1-5C alkylene, -CO-, -S-, etc.; Z is -SO2 or -CO-; R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are -CH3, -C2H5, etc.; n1-n4 are 0-4) and the total content of phenolic hydroxyl groups and phenolate terminals of <=0.5% based on the whole terminal groups. Almost all of the terminal groups thereof are halogen, alkyl ether, aryl ether or aralkyl ether. This polyether is obtained by adding an organic halide compound to an equimolar mixture of a dihydric phenol expressed by formula II with a dihalogenobenzenoid compound expressed by formula III (X and X' are halogen at the o- or p-position to Z) and reacting the compounds in an organic highly polar inert solvent.
