PURPOSE: To enable a second compressor to be smoothly energized for its operation by a method wherein as each of the two compressors is changed over from its single operation to dual operations, both compressors are started for operation after the operation of the compressor already operated is stopped for a specified period of time. CONSTITUTION: A multi-control section 60 of a branch device B sends a discriminating signal to an outdoor control section 50 of an outdoor device A when a capacity of each of the indoor devices C to E is changed from its single compressor operation to operations of dual compressors. Then, the outdoor control section 50 stops a driving motor 1M for driving one compressor, for example, and after elapsing of a specified period of time, the control section starts both driving motors 1M, 2M through inverter circuits 51, 52 and gradually increases its frequency and then starts the rotational drivings of both compressors. In this way, the second compressor can be started reliably and smoothly.
