Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain beta-SIALON-alpha-silicon nitride composite powder giving sintered compact having high fracture toughness, by reductively nitriding raw material blended with silicon powder, alumina powder and carbon powder under a specified two-stage temp. condition. CONSTITUTION:Silicon powder, alumina powder and carbon powder as reducing agent (e.g. acetylene black powder) are blended in the proportion giving SIALON. Then, the obtd. blended raw material is reductively nitrided in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1,350-1,460 deg.C for >=2hr and thereafter, further reductively nitrided at 1,470-1,550 deg.C for >=2hr. Then, the residual carbon is removed by heating the obtd. powder in the air to obtain the alpha-SIALON-alpha-silicon nitride composite powder. The sintered compact of the obtd. composite powder has high fracture toughness and can be used for the purpose required high fracture toughness, such as for cutting tool.
