Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a ceramic sintered body having improved bending strength at high temp. by mixing mullite-based powder with powder and/or whiskers of a nonoxide, press-molding and sintering the mixture and heat treating the sintered body at a prescribed temp. CONSTITUTION:Mullite-based powder is mixed with powder and/or whiskers of a nonoxide such as SiC or Si3N4 and the mixture is press-molded and sintered. The sintered body is heat treated at 900-1,550 deg.C. By this heat treatment, the surface layer of the sintered body is modified and a ceramic sintered body having superior bending strength at high temp. is obtd. The obtd. ceramic sintered body is suitable for use as an engine member, the roller of a roller hearth kiln or other heat resistant member.
