Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce the titled preform having improved shape retaining characteristics without adding a binder, etc., thereto by heating a spare preform obtd. by molding the whisker or fiber of potassium titanate at the specific temp. CONSTITUTION:The whisker or fiber of potassium titanate is dispersed into water, etc., is filtered and is thereafter dried to prepare a spare preform. Said formed spare preform is heated for prescribed times at >=700 deg.C. By this method, the preform in which the whisker is partially bonded each other and maintaining shape retaining characteristics without an adhesive agent can be obtd. The required part of an FRM member can be accurately subjected to fiber reinforcing without causing large shrinkage to the preform even when the matrix metals such as Al alloy are immersed thereto by a high-pressure casting method, etc., at the time of using said preform.
