When a copy is taken in the face-up mode, the original holding plate 19 of an original reading device 18 is only mounted in contact with the top surface of an original 16a and when a book original is copied in the face-up mode, the original reading device 18 is only mounted on a page of the book original to be copied similarly. Consequently, a copy is taken in face-up or face-down mode at need.
