Abstract

PURPOSE:To scale down the system and to reduce costs by employing ferroelectric liquid crystal possessing bistability against electric fields and recording latent images formed by x-rays on an accumulated fluorescent emitting layer as images in the layer of said liquid crystal by means of laser irradiation. CONSTITUTION:Voltage is previously impressed on a liquid crystal light valve 1 from a power source 4 to stabilize the liquid crystal in a 1st orientation state. Then, x-rays are projected from an x-ray generating source 2 through an object 5 on the accumulated fluorescent layer on the liquid crystal light valve 1, and latent images are formed. Fluorescent light is generated on the accumulated fluorescent layer by laser irradiation from an He-Ne laser 3 to correspond with latent images. Said light emission finishes in a relatively short time. However, since the voltage of the liquid crystal layer corresponding to a part on which fluorescent light is projected causes the liquid crystal to turn into a 2nd orientation stable state, the latent images formed by x-rays on the accumulated fluorescent layer are recorded as images in the layer of the liquid crystal by laser irradiation, and said images are read onto a screen 13 by light from a light source 12.
